PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE - WEEKLY JOURNAL
WEEK 1 - 15.01.2020
In this class, we learn about Professional Experience. This subject’s purpose is to support us with the opportunity to grow our skills and to encourage adaptable and flexible approaches towards recruitment and professional opportunities. We learn to distinguish our future pathways by knowing ourselves better. This can be done by recognising our strengths and weaknesses. Besides, we also learnt that digital media practice is one of the first important things you should know before job application.
Since this is only the first class, we were given a brief assessment for this subject. There are four tasks to be completed before the deadline;a work placement, an online portfolio, a professional CV and a journal. During the class, our lecturer let us do some personality test. We get to know what characteristics each of us belongs to and it was quite exciting. Besides, we had simple discussions on our future career path. Are we sure of what we want and where we wanna go in the future? Whether it is working in a studio / agency, an in house brand / company or as a freelancer, it all matters. We started off our discussion with a few simple questions.
1. Who do we want to be in the future?
2. Where do we wish to go after graduate?
Very simple questions but it makes me think deeper about my future. There are various of employment mode available for designer. It is important to think wisely on which one you really wish to be at. Whether you want to start up your own business or work for someone else, it requires deep consideration. As for me, I would consider starting off in a design studio first. I feel more comfortable working with smaller teams as I am an extreme introvert. Besides, in a smaller company, you get to enhance your skills and knowledges more by learning from one another. In compare to agencies where you normally get extremely busy, it is not that easy to practice or learn new things quickly. It is important to balance between hard and soft skills. Hard skills are teachable abilities that are easily measurable, known as technical abilities.Soft skills are interpersonal skills where it is important when it comes to dealing with people. (Malsam, 2019)
3. Have we consider on our employment mode?
4. How was our internship experience?
Activities
For this week's activity, we are required to explore our insights by determining the strengths and weaknesses in us. We have to ensure that the strengths we have can help in raising our visibility. There is a video on ‘Skills Every Child Will Need to 21st Century’ attached as well as a reading on ‘Excerpt from Becoming a Graphic and Digital Designer’. Next, in this activity, we also try figuring out if there is any other 21st Century Skills we have that will assist in developing our career. In addition, it is vital to know the criteria the industry looks for.

WEEK 2 - 22.01.2020
In the class, we had discussion with lecturer on our previous branding and portfolios too. She gave advice and suggestions on our works on the improvement that can be made. After the discussion, I decided to create a new and better version, changing a new concept and improving on my portfolio works. Before defining our new personal branding, research on self-assessment needed to be done. To be clear, we need to understand ourselves, inside and outside. Personal branding is a planned process in which people make efforts to market themselves. Therefore, be sure of your insights and develop your brand story well.
Activities
This week we were assigned an activity on study of personal self-assessment. A PDF file is given to us and we need to fill up the form. Through this activity, I really get to understand myself better and find out which career path I’m looking forward to in the future.

WEEK 3 - 29.01.2020
From this week’s lecture, I learned how to excel in presentation, the importance of communication and presentation skills. Do you always experience nervousness when giving a presentation? Does your anxiety level increase? Why is it so? There are a few tips given by our lecturer that help in enhancing our presentation skills. First is mental rehearsal. You can try going through the presentation in your mind, talk to yourself and practice the whole thing over and over again. It can be as simple as doing it while driving or when you are in the toilet. Next, body confidence. Eye contact with your audiences is very important. You must make sure there is interaction between you and the audience. A little gesture also helps in emphasizing points, and keeping you relaxed. Try not to fold your hand or clasp them behind the back. Be confident in your pronunciation and keep practising. Practise makes perfect. Using the right voice and tone will helps in having a good sense of dictation (Chivers & Shoolbred, 2007)
To make sure your presentation actually counts, there are few skills that are useful to grab.
1.Tell a story
Experts agree that stories are the important factor to persuasive presentations. Even if it is a tedious topic, the presentations do not have to be restricted to boring slides of bulleted lists. Try combining the facts and ideas together to form a story. If you make people feel what you are talking about, they won’t forget it.” says Jane Praeger. (Alvernia University, 2019)
2. Slow down
Research shows that a slow speech rate has calming effect on others. It also deepen people’s respect for you. Besides, it increases the understanding ability. It cut down the chances of mistakes you might made from speaking overly fast. Speaking too fast makes you sound like you are babbling to yourself. It may make you look like you have no confidence in your work or idea. (Alvernia University, 2019)
A bad slides is a show of bad presentation. It is advised to always keep the slide simple. Always remember the 10/20/30 Rule of PowerPoint. It actually means a slides should have only ten slides, not longer than twenty minutes, and contains font size that is no smaller than thirty points. (Guy Kawasaki, 2016) Most of the effective slides are only few words long. Hyatt once said, "The more words you use, the less readable they become." (Alvernia University, 2019)
Activities
The activity this week is to test our presentation skills. Each of us were ask to come out with a presentation topic. I had decided to talk on one of the Malaysia Folklore.

WEEK 4 - 05.02.2020
Things that can be improved :
1. The branding
It was mentioned that they was seeking on Rimowa as their brand reference. Rimowa's branding are more artistic compared to other travelling brand. However, their social media feed are posted with lots of travelling images. It seems too colourful and it does not really matches their original branding. They said that this is because they do not want to hardsell their luggage, hence the travelling pictures to make it look more casual.
2. Social media
It seems like Ikii's social media post has no much planning. The first impression to me was it is a little too messy. When I was scrolling through, I did not know where to stop and look at. Besides, it has too much repetition on videos of their luggage featuring. I personally feel that there is no need to keep posting the same content over and over again. Audience might get bored looking at it.
After the meeting, we carried on with our presentation of the topic chosen last week. Lecturer commented and gave suggestions on how to improve our slides. The sequence of slides are important too in order to catch audience's attention. Facts that are too boring may causes audience to lose attraction. No matter how interesting the topic of presentation is, it will still be a bad presentation if the opening is boring and draggy. I've learn quite a lot through the presentation today and hoping I will do a better one next time.
Activities
For this week, we are asked to identify the mistakes from two poor and unprofessional CVs. Throughout this activity, I have learn on how to write a good CV and what are the do's and don'ts.

WEEK 5 - 12.02.2020
In this class, we learn about the pros and cons of being a freelancer. It is advised to work at least a few years in a studio before setting out as a self-employed designer. This is because you will not have enough working experience when you just graduate. Clients might not have enough trust and confidence on you too. (Hannam, 2013) There are few common problems that freelancer will faced.
1. Vague requests
Most freelancers have come across clients who don’t initially reveal what they want from a project. In some cases, clients are not very sure of their goals and what they want, hoping designers can help identifying them. They are also some clients who are afraid that they might offend you. Hence they dare not be too direct in their instructions. This may end up to redoing the project completely when it does not meet clients satisfaction. To avoid problems like this, it is our job to insist clients to voice out their ideas. (Maguire, 2019)
2. Time Management
Being a freelancer, you have to manage your own time. If deadlines isn’t important to you, you’ll quickly lose clients. Never ever slip into habit of procastinating work or leaving projects till last minute. It is important to plan your schedule wisely so it is less stressful and you can provide better work qualities. (Harel, 2019)
3. Late Payment
Just as it’s annoying to be offered less than what you’re worth for the works and services you provide, it is as disturbing to meet a client who pays late or take it as free. Fortunately, freelancers have alternative ways when it comes to collecting payment. Control the behavior of clients is impossible, but you can manage your expectations and responses. (Maguire, 2019)
Contract
In order to avoid and prevent these issues, it is important for freelance designer to produce a contract before starting with the projects. The contract is a legal document that protects both designer and client. It contains details of works, duration and expected cost. (Hannam, 2013) When client sees that you have a polished contract, it builds up more confidence in your abilities. There are a few important components to be included in a contract.
1. Detailed Description
Before starting the project, have your client to fill out a detailed brief of things to be done. For example, if it is a branding project, they will definitely need a logo, styling, name card and other promotional items. List everything out in the contract needed to be deliver to them, as well as things needed from them. (Format Team, 2019)
Plan your time wisely. Identify which deliverables need to be done first, and sort out duration needed to create them. Next, choose an appropriate date to provide those to the client, with the knowing of some back-and-forth communication needed to polish them up. Having solid dates to aim will help avoiding last minute panicked and changes as it helps you to stay on trach. Client will have heads up on when to receive the work too. (Format Team, 2019)
3. Copyright Ownership
This part of your contract should clearly state that once client has paid, they are free to use your design. However, remember to include a part where you have the right to use the work and showcase them in your portfolio. (Hannam, 2013)
Most contracts will state that either the designer or the client can terminate the project at any time. However, both parties need to agreed to it and signed the contract. It is up to the designer to decide the parameters for termination, but the most common clause is that the client needs to pay for the work done up till the termination date. If client were to terminate it close to the end, state it clearly in the contract that they are still responsible to make full payment. (Format Team, 2019)
Before this class, I did not know that a contract is so important for designer, especially freelancer. I have learn a lot of information that is useful in my future.
Activities
This week's activity we were given two different scenarios of projects. Each of us were to choose of and create a contract regarding this project.
Questions:
Answer:
Lightbox
- May I know what is the size of your lightbox?
- Do you prefer it to be a print or digital version?
- Where do you want to place your menu?
- What size would you prefer?
- How many pages do you want it to be? One, two or foldable?
- How will you actually hang your bunting?
- If you have a stand, what is the shape of your stand?

WEEK 6 - 19.02.2020
In this class, we had discussion on our branding and journal progress. Lecturer felt that our journal are just mere description of what happened. They were lack of critical reflection. Hence, she gave us some tips on writing a better journal. It is important to include our reflection and own thinking into the journal writing. The three things that needed to be include in our writing are as below.
1. Task and Situation
Summary of the task done such as what had happened this week or what have we learnt during the class.
2. Learning
Self learning by adding more information through extra readings. More research needed to be done to support the ideas and thinking.
3. Reflect
Keep asking yourself questions based on the projects done. The skills that was learn from this project, can it be applied again in the future? Did the things learnt useful to us? Was it helpful in the future. Does it make you a better designer? By answering these questions, it is already part of reflection.
As for branding progress, the concept still need some huge improvement. Can hardly see the bigger picture yet. The progress can be seen in Professional Development journal.

WEEK 8 - 04.03.2020
At the same time, we did another shooting during class too. This time we did it in a small cozy room as it suits our theme and mood. The idea was to shoot a very casual featuring video as client does not want it to be too hardsell. The progress went quite smooth today and we managed to complete the works on the task list. The work placement progress can be seen in Work Placement journal.

WEEK 9 - 18.02.2020 (replacement class)
1. Communication skills
It is important when you have meeting with client to discuss on the project. First you have to know your client. Some client might not understand the design jargon you use. One of the way is to challenge yourself to practice discussing about design with others outside the field. Like what Buckway says, “Find various method to explain things without mentioning kerning or pantone. The typical client will not understand, thus you need to explain in a way that they will understand.” (Brooks, 2019)
No matter what profession you’re in, networking is the key that accelerates success. Networking skill helps in building strong relationships over time with people. It requires time investment to see the results. Most people don’t gain returns straight away and ended giving up. It is a long term investment that might help in your future career. Avoid unnecessary conflict especially with clients.
3. Problem solving skills
It is the ability and flexibility to handle difficult or unexpected situations in the workplace effectively as well as complex challenges in work. It is a very important skills in every career at every state. As a designer, there is definitely a lot of problems happen around us. No matter you are a freelancer, or working under company. You have to always go through fog and clutter to create a solution. (Indeed, 2020)
Activity
For this week's activity, we were to discuss on the case scenario of problems that we faced being a designer. Especially when dealing with clients from different field. We need to come out with solutions on we get ourselves out of it and the skills acquired to solve the problems.

WEEK 11 - 25.03.2020
Since the movement control order is gonna happen for two weeks, we will all have to stay at home and work from home. Hence, we had online class today about job interview. Whenever it comes to an interview, there are usually broken down into few stages.
1. Introduction
First impression always happen to be the most important one. It is actually not that complicated. Never forget to greet the interviewer with a smile, shakes hand, make good eye contacts and always remember to be well-behaved. (Paycor, 2020) Some employers may take the time to share details about their companies. Good to jot them down for future reference. (UMBC, 2020)
2. Small Talk
Some employers like to run a small talk with candidate after interview. This is another way to know the candidate better as words may reflect a person's behaviour and characteristic. (Schafer, 2011) It is also one of the way to strengthen a healthy working relationship. (Paycor, 2020) Try to be calm and avoid turning the situation into an awkward mess.

3. Information Gathering
4. Question / Answer
This stage takes up the longest part in an interview. Employers will ask you questions and listens to your feedback. The employer will also ask if you have any questions for them. Always be prepared and feel free to ask any thoughtful questions. This is a chance to show your interest and knowledge of the organization. (UMBC, 2020)5. Wrapping Up
You may take the last few minutes to end on a positive note. Restate your interest in the position and collect business cards from everyone.Remember to thank them for the invitation to interview and always remember to end the interview with a firm handshake. (UMBC, 2020)
In order to make us have the experience, our lecturer did a short interview section with us during class. There are four sections of questions being asked. Opening questions, character question, professional work section and case scenario question. Each of us take turn to answer the questions asked.
Question:
- Can you tell me a little about yourself?
- Why do you apply for this position?
- What are your greatest accomplishments thus far?
- How do you deal with criticism?
- What did you like most about being a designer?
- What do you anticipate to be negative about working with us?
- You are currently stuck or unsure of the work. What would you do?
- You received 2 different sets of instructions from the AD and AE. What would you do?
Answer:
- I'm Sue Ann, currently a junior designer pursuing my degree in Digital Media. I have just graduated with diploma in Multimedia Design. I love exploring and enthusiastic to try new things out.
- I came across your company's profile via online and saw the job posting. After viewing through the portfolio, I am interested with the projects done and it seems like an opportunity for me to enhance specific skills that will improve me a lot in my career.
- My greatest accomplishment was to win two awards in the same competition, Best of Show and Crowd Favourite. I participated in a interactive light art competition and my work was exhibited in public for a month. Although there are many challenges faced throughout the making, I am proud that I did not give up and managed to get things done.
- I take criticism with good intention and as a step for me to improve. Everyone is not perfect and everyone has their own point of view. I will first ask for better suggestion from the person and try to improve things from there.
- I love challenges and exploring new things. Being a designer gives me a lot of opportunities to create new things and there is always things that are exciting to look forward to.
- Things definitely doesn't goes as smooth as you think. There might be conflicts or unhappy moments during work. However, I will take everything as part of learning and to enhance my problem solving skills.
- I will approach the senior to have a discussion and get things clearer. Also to seek for better suggestions. Like how the sayings go "two heads are better than one."
- I will re-verified the instructions given and suggest them to have a discussion to come out with a final conclusion. Things cannot be done efficiently when both leaders have different opinions.
Before the interview, there are few important things needed to be remember. Always make sure to be prepared. Get your documents such as CV. cover letter, portfolio and certificates ready beforehand. Never do it last minute as you may tend to missed out one or two things. Besides, dress professionally for the interview. Do not leave ironing clothes to the last minute. Do it the night before, get everything sort out earlier. (Hays, 2019) Another important thing is always be punctual for the interview. (Reed, 2014) Best to aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early.
Brushing up your interview etiquette will leave a good impression too. The last thing you want is distraction during one of the most important meetings of your life. Make sure your mobile is being switched off or kept in silent mode. Do not put it in vibration mode too as it can still be heard. It is not nice to be seen rummaging your bag to silent it. Never ever step on the last 3 words of someone's conversation. It is rude to do so. Let the person finish their sentence between cutting them off. (Michael, 2020)
It was definitely an interesting and informative class today as we will have to faced interview when the times come. This is to help us get prepared and have heads up on things so that we will not be too nervous and stressed out about it. Being prepared, you’ll feel more in control and will look calm. Interviewing skills is always the most important one when it comes to job seeking. Thus, ensure you get the skills brush up.
Activity
It is important to also ask your potential employer questions in interview. This is to demonstrate your interest in the job. The type of questions you chose should based on what you need to know in order to fulfil the position. The questions asked need to be well thought out. Hence, we were asked to state at least 5 right questions to ask in an interview.
Question:
Answer:
Yes. To know better about the company and the people we will be working with. We get to know if the company is what we want.

WEEK 12 - 01.04.2020
It is the last week of class today. We discussed about portfolio and the things that need to be included. A professional portfolio provides a space which you plan and reflect in depth on your skills, strengths and find ways in building more of it. It is a representation of your work and personal brand. It is the single most important vehicle you have for career seeking. (Anderson, 2016) It is not easy to get the best clients, and can be even more challenging to begin as a new competitor with your product or service. Hence, a portfolio that showcases your success is essential to knockout the first impression. (Robinson, 2018)
Things to be included in portfolio:
Make your portfolio seems like you are telling your story, experience and personality. You may share things like how you started loving design, or your first ever experience in designing a product. The information must be relatable and personable. (Robinson, 2018)
State it clearly at the about page on what you do. Do not confuse the audience with unnecessary informations as this is the road to your jobs. Never be afraid to embrace your title and strengths. It will be better if your future clients know what it will be like to work with you. (Robinson, 2018)
Consider the presentation method of your artwork depending on print or digital works. Think wisely the way to portray each artwork, especially the printed works. (Eisenman, 2011) It is the best to show what you have already done as clients can then predict what you can do. Never be shy to show off your best work, explain the work you are passionate about and most proud of. (Robinson, 2018)
4. Navigation
Plan the web structure carefully before designing. Consider on the number of pages, contents, and the placing of menu and icons. Make sure your overall portfolio design is straightforward and user-friendly. Do not let your overdo design steal the focus from your work. Always be thoughtful that some of your clients might not be in this field, thus you need to make sure the website is understandable and easy to navigate. Try to keep things simple, clear, and focused. (Robinson, 2018)Make it convenient for viewers to get in touch with you. Incorporate a contact form on your website alongside your email address, contact numbers and even social media accounts.
Portfolio website is always work in progress. Just because it is done and on live, it does not mean it is over. Never stop adding new projects that you currently work on.Having your great work all in one place does not only looks good to a client, it can also inspire you. For example, if you ever get stuck or lost, you can always look back at things you’ve done and feel a sense of accomplishment. It reminds you to not give up on your dream job. You’ve created many fantastic things, and you will continue creating many more.
The portfolio progress can be seen in Portfolio journal.
